Arnold Schoenberg is a famous Australian-American music composer known for his influence in the German music movements and the creation of new music techniques. The album for the poster was Schoenberg’s 17 fragments played by the pianist, Yoko Hirota. This is a poster that aimed to create a visual representation of the musician’s works.

Listening to the music was an integral part of conceptualizing it. After weeks of experimenting with many mediums, using light and paper to create this visual achieved the desired effect of abstractly representing Schoenberg’s creative process. The process is relevant to his experimental piano tones. The different folds have rhythm and the harsh lighting casts shadows that create depth. The design also resembles a piano and can be interpreted as fragments of the piano sheets that were salvaged for this album.
With this poster, my objective was to create a design that could properly compliment the music. I tested out a variety of different possibilities while listening to the album to ensure that my explorations were in direct connection with the music itself. My choice of deep red and rich black help translate visually both the elegance and intensity of Schoenberg’s piano music.
